Ruins of the Great East Japan Earthquake Sedai Arahama Elementary School
32-1 Arahama Shinborihata, Wakabayashi-ku, Sendai, Japan, 984-0033The area was struck by a 10-meter-high tsunami, leading 320 students, staff, and residents to evacuate to the rooftop of Arahama Elementary School, where they survived. Today, the school building is preserved as a public memorial.
The school building is preserved as a monument and features exhibition rooms dedicated to the disaster. From the rooftop, you can view the surrounding area's reconstruction and compare before-and-after photos of the tsunami's impact.
